Indiana Foundation Service Sponsors Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk

Life is precious, and the importance of kindness and extending a helping hand cannot be overstated. Giving to those in need is at the heart of what we do at Indiana Foundation Service.

We are proud to announce our partnership with the Indiana Chapter of the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, specifically the 2024 Indy Out of the Darkness Walk.

The Heart of the AFSP: Awareness and Advocacy

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), founded in 1987, is a volunteer-driven health organization that unites those impacted by suicide into a powerful nationwide network. Through research, education, and advocacy, AFSP empowers communities to take meaningful action against one of our nation’s leading causes of death.

At its core, AFSP pursues a dual mission: preserving lives and offering hope to those touched by suicide, including survivors coping with loss. The organization advances mental health awareness through four key initiatives: funding scientific studies, public education about mental health and suicide prevention, advocacy for stronger mental health policies, and providing support to loss survivors and those affected by suicide.

Indiana established its AFSP chapter in 2008, joining a growing national network of local chapters that bring together community members committed to preventing suicide in their areas.

Into the Light

The Out of the Darkness movement, launched in 2004, features Community Walks as its centerpiece. These walks, hosted in hundreds of cities nationwide, create safe spaces for people to share their personal connections to suicide prevention. The events foster an environment of understanding around mental health as participants—whether friends, families, colleagues, or neighbors—walk together to honor loved ones and support one another.

Locals Light the Way

Out of Darkness walks are all victories, including the Sept. 7 event in Indianapolis, raising more than $435,000. It’s an honor to celebrate the local event’s success and unity.

You can join the fight in suicide prevention, too. AFSP Indiana offers many ways to get involved, including volunteering and donating.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is one way our company returns the blessings we’ve been given. For more information about Goodworks, our community outreach program, please visit www.groundworks.com/goodworks.
